SHARKS
FRESHEST SCREAMS
ON THE BIG SCREEN
How did these clips make you feel?
Scared, nurvous, disgusted, frightened, sad, angry..
Theses are mearly a few breif moments taken from distinctive block busting Shark productions such as Jaws (1975), Bait, Sharknado and Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus.
For almost over 50 years sharks have been the prime image of fear towards the ocean. But where did this all start. Why does a small piece of footage make us cower at the thought of swimming within the slightest depths of the ocean? Features such as camera work, lighting, special effects and a simple soundtrack combined manipulate our senses, cloud our outlook on the world around us and almost create a new perspective. With classics such as Jaws and Sharknado, we are taken to a new outlook on life. A new perspective. A new opinion. On sharks.
Their Identity
For years the identity of sharks has been pushed, shoved, moulded, squished and shaped into what the media institutions want us to see. Ever since Spielberg released his number one classic jaws back in 1975, our opinion on the underwater predators has never truly been the same. The film caused a major outburst of commotion and drama leading to some members of the public never setting foot in the ocean again.
Since this event, countless aspects of the media has used this to their advantage producing film after film going from deep blue sea to the reef and then off course to the classic Sharknado. I mean who doesn’t love a good shark film right? So much drama and tension and of course we all feel that sense of relief towards the end as the humans become victorious. But past the whole fictional entertaining plot, lies the exploitation of an unrealistic image of a great white or bull shark. These film makers purposely pry on the fear we have as a human, the dear of being eaten, drowning or even just being chased within the ocean slowly bleeding to death. Not nice is it. Well that’s what these film makers rely on. They rely on our sense of fear and pain, this idea that whilst you go swimming in the ocean staring at all the pretty fish and bam! You've been bitten.
However, it’s not just fictional film makers who exploit this unrealistic image of these amazing creatures. No. New stations such as fox, Abc and the BBC always cover footage of shark 'attacks'.
